Dental Implants Are a Cost-Effective Solution for Missing Teeth

How does the cost of dental implants compare to other options for replacing missing teeth?

Cost-Effective Dental Implants

If you do a little research online, you’ll find that the initial investment for dental implants is generally higher than the cost of other tooth replacement options. But implants appear to be more economical in the long run.

Recent research published in the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI) found that implants are a cost-effective treatment for missing teeth.

Dental Implants Preserve Oral Health

During implant surgery, the oral surgeon places a titanium post into the empty tooth socket. This replacement tooth root bonds to the surrounding bone, providing an anchor for the artificial tooth. But the titanium rod also has another function: It helps prevent bone deterioration.

A dental bridge, on the other hand, does not replace the tooth root, so jawbone degradation is likely over time. Plus, putting in a bridge requires filing the adjacent teeth down significantly, which can make them weaker and more susceptible to decay.

By choosing implants instead of a bridge, you can avoid dealing with costly future dental issues related to your missing teeth.

Dental Implants Last a Lifetime

With good dental hygiene habits and regular checkups and professional cleanings, implants can last forever.

Not so with a dental bridge, however.

Because this option does not include a replacement tooth root, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate. Eventually, the bridge will not fit as comfortably, and will need to be adjusted or replaced.

If bone loss is severe, the contour of the jaw can be affected. Costly reconstructive jaw surgery could become necessary at some point to stabilize the jaw.

Dental Implants Can Be Affordable

Despite what you may have heard about the costs of implants, they may be more affordable than you think. Your dental insurance may cover a portion of the costs. Payment plans are also available in many cases, allowing you to pay for the procedure over the course of several months.

The fees for implant surgery depend upon several factors, including how many you need and whether a bone graft is required before the implants can be placed.

Consulting with an oral surgeon is the only way to know how much your implants will actually cost, and you may be pleasantly surprised, finding them to be well within your budget.
