How to Make Your Wisdom Tooth Extraction Comfortable

If you’re a tad nervous about an upcoming wisdom tooth extraction, rest assured this is a perfectly normal feeling. But you have no need to worry, because today’s medical technology makes almost any oral surgery or extraction quick and easy.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Comfortable

You can take some steps yourself, however, to ensure that your procedure is as comfortable as possible, and to help facilitate your speedy recovery.

Ask Questions Before Your Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Knowing exactly what to expect will go a long way toward making you feel at ease for your wisdom tooth removal.

Our experienced oral surgeons will explain how the procedure will be performed, but don’t hesitate to ask questions. Before your procedure, we also will provide you with preparation instructions. Make sure you understand them or ask for clarification if you need it.

If you still feel anxious after this, let your oral surgeon know.

Our compassionate team will make every effort to help you relax. Several sedation options are available, and most patients are able to choose their own method of anesthesia.

The surgical team also can offer other tips, such as practicing breathing exercises or listening to music that may help relieve your stress.

Schedule Wisdom Tooth Removal Wisely

While you may want to have your tooth extraction over and done with as soon as possible, we always recommend that our patients choose their oral surgery date carefully. You may have some discomfort or swelling for two to three days afterward, and you may need up to a week to fully recover.

Be sure to consider your recovery time when choosing the date for your procedure.

If you are free on the weekends, consider scheduling your wisdom tooth surgery at the end of the week, to give yourself the weekend to recover. Or if you are a student, take advantage of your off-time and have the procedure done during a school break.

Select a time when you have few responsibilities and when help will be available if you need it during recovery.

Always Follow Wisdom Tooth Extraction Aftercare Instructions

We will provide you with instructions on how to care for yourself after your tooth extraction. Following these guidelines will make your recovery go more smoothly and help prevent complications.

Post-surgery instructions generally include information on how to handle any potential swelling or discomfort. We also recommend a soft-food diet after oral surgery. And, of course, properly caring for your mouth is important, so we will provide information on how to keep your teeth clean as well as tips on what to avoid (drinking from a straw, for example).

Once your procedure is done, be sure to contact our office if you have questions or concerns about any symptoms you are experiencing. Depending upon your situation, you may need to come in for a follow-up visit.

The sooner we can see you, the better the chances of avoiding complications, so don’t wait if you have a concern.
