What types of oral surgery do you provide?

Our doctors provide a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgery services. Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Dental implants
  • Tooth extractions
  • Bone grafting
  • Exposure of impacted teeth
  • Corrective jaw surgery
  • Oral pathology
  • Facial trauma treatment
  • Teeth-in-a-Day procedures
  • Treatment of facial pain and other oral and facial conditions

Your oral surgeon will evaluate your needs and explain which treatment options are appropriate for you.

What sedation options are available for oral surgery?

We understand that many patients feel nervous or anxious about oral surgery. Our practice offers several anesthesia and sedation options, depending on your procedure, medical history, and individual needs.

Options may include:

  • Local anesthesia to numb the treatment area while you remain awake
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you feel calm and relaxed
  • Oral sedation using medication prescribed before your procedure
  • IV sedation to provide a deeper level of relaxation and allow you to remain comfortable during treatment
  • General anesthesia for certain complex procedures when appropriate

Your oral surgeon will discuss your options with you before treatment and determine which forms of sedation are safe and appropriate for your procedure.

Can I be asleep during my oral surgery?

Depending on your procedure and medical history, IV sedation may allow you to be deeply relaxed and largely unaware of the procedure while your surgery is performed.

Our surgical staff is trained to assist with IV sedation and outpatient anesthesia, and patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery.

Not every sedation option is appropriate for every patient. Your surgeon will review your health history, medications, procedure, and individual needs before recommending an anesthesia plan.

Is sedation available for wisdom teeth removal?

Yes. Sedation is commonly used for wisdom teeth removal, particularly for patients who are anxious about surgery or who prefer to be less aware of the procedure.

During your consultation, if you have any concerns, your oral surgeon will explain the available anesthesia options and help determine the approach that is appropriate for you.

What makes your office a good choice for anxious patients?

We understand that oral surgery can cause anxiety, particularly for patients who have had difficult dental experiences in the past.

Our team focuses on clear communication and patient comfort. We explain what you can expect, answer your questions, and discuss sedation options before your procedure.

Our goal is to make your experience as comfortable and straightforward as possible while maintaining patient safety throughout treatment.

How does your office prioritize safety during sedation?

Patient safety is our first priority when determining anesthesia and sedation options.

Our surgical staff includes experienced, certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants who are trained to assist with IV sedation and surgery. All staff members are CPR certified and trained to help manage rare medical emergencies.

Patients receiving IV sedation are continuously monitored during and after surgery. Before anesthesia, your medical history and medications will be reviewed to make sure your planned sedation is appropriate.

Do you have multiple locations?

Yes. One of the benefits of choosing Oral & Facial Surgery of Utah is having access to three office locations.

Cottonwood Heights

6710 S Blackstone Rd, Suite 104
Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121

South Jordan

4775 W Daybreak Pkwy, Suite 104
South Jordan, UT 84095

Tooele

156 E 2000 N, Suite 200
Tooele, UT 84074

Having three locations makes it easier for patients throughout Salt Lake County, the surrounding communities, and Tooele County to access specialized oral surgery care.

Can I choose which office I visit?

Yes. When requesting an appointment, you can select the location that is most convenient for you: Cottonwood Heights, South Jordan, or Tooele.

Having multiple offices can make scheduling oral surgery more convenient for families who live or work in different parts of the area.

Do you treat emergency oral surgery needs?

If you are experiencing significant dental or oral pain or have an emergency situation, our team will make every attempt to see you the same day.

When you contact the office, let the scheduling team know that you are experiencing an urgent problem so they can help determine the appropriate next step.

What happens during my first visit?

Your first appointment typically includes a consultation where your oral surgeon evaluates your condition, explains your diagnosis, and discusses your treatment options.

In some cases, surgery may be performed on the same day as your consultation. More complex medical histories or treatment plans may require a separate appointment for surgery.

If you have existing X-rays from your dentist or another provider, you may be asked to bring them or have them forwarded to the office.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?

Your dentist or physician may refer you to our office for oral surgery, and you should bring your referral and any applicable X-rays to your appointment.

If additional imaging is necessary, our office can take the appropriate films as part of your evaluation.

Why choose an oral and maxillofacial surgeon instead of a general dentist for oral surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete additional hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after dental school. This specialized training prepares them to diagnose and surgically treat conditions involving the teeth, jaws, mouth, face, and related structures.

At Oral & Facial Surgery of Utah, our doctors provide a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and have extensive training in both surgery and anesthesia.

This means patients can have their surgical treatment and anesthesia needs evaluated by specialists whose training is specifically focused on oral and maxillofacial surgery.
